The ESLI Experience

ESLI Mission:
To improve the English language skills
of international students
and prepare them for academic success
in North American universities.

The ESLI language Centers are designed to prepare students from non-English speaking countries to successfully enter and study at North American universities.

Listening: Using a variety of sources, students learn effective listening skills that they can implement both inside and outside the classroom.

Speaking / Pronunciation: Students gain confidence speaking in a variety of situations: casual conversations, formal dialogue, class presentations, etc.

Reading: Through in class reading exercises and a personalized reading program, students learn to read for pleasure and for university studies. Exposure to a wide variety of texts provides students with opportunities to find and select their own materials as well as develop some personal preferences.

Composition: Through guided practice students learn writing skills from basic paragraphs through the process of researching, organizing, and composing research papers. Confidence in self and peer evaluation is encouraged. Students also learn word-processing skills to prepare for university writing assignments.

Vocabulary: Students develop a vocabulary base appropriate for everyday conversations and classroom situations. In addition, they learn methods for long-term building and retaining functional vocabulary.

Grammar: Students are encouraged to learn grammar through use. Grammar instruction is provided within the context of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

ESLI Language Centers

These centers are integrated into the academic, social, and cultural life of each host university to give our students a fully enriched study abroad experience.

Located on the campus of the ESLI host schools, ESLI provides each student with the opportunity to interact with North American students in the dorms, social clubs, athletic events, school dining halls, on the tennis courts and soccer fields, etc.

Academic English & University Entrance or English Only

Students who attend ESLI have the choice of Academic English & University Entrance or English Only studies. The ESLI host universities offer academically qualified students admission to the university degree programs upon successful completion of the ESLI program.

Curriculum

The ESLI curriculum focuses on the needs and goals of each student. When students enroll in ESLI, they take a placement exam to determine which level of instruction is appropriate. ESLI in Canada has 5 levels plus a Pre-Masters level. ESLI in the USA offers 4 levels; Preparatory , Foundations, Intermediate and Pre-University. Each level targets students' abilities and motivates the students to progress in their language acquisition as quickly as possible.

Students learn, practice and use English in real and practical ways that are functional and life changing.

Students have to opportunity to live on campus, study English, and use the facilities of the university. ESLI students are immersed in an English speaking environment in their classes, in housing accommodations and during field trips and school activities.

In order to advance to the next level or to complete the ESLI program, students must have the following averages in every class:

Preparatory - 70%
Foundations - 70%
Intermediate - 75%
Pre-University - 80%
